Weekly Update

I'm so long-winded that even my 'skipped' blogs are around 1k words.

I’ve done my best to not do this very often, but like I did right around the holidays I’m taking a week off from writing a pre-numbers content post.  Most of the week was fine for me, but I went through some pretty heavy emotional stuff over the weekend, which is when I normally draft these blogs.  The Spanish studying itself proved to be a welcome distraction during those days, but by the tail end of Sunday I knew that the blog was a bit outside the scope of where my mind was at.  I’m going to do my best to not make a habit out of this, because I do enjoy writing these blogs, it adds an interesting structure to my week, and it helps me organize and streamline my own thoughts about language learning.  This week was just … hard.  Which is okay, I’ve dealt with a lot of hard things in my life, including during the running time of this blog, this was just the time when it landed on the writing days.

I’d say that everything’s okay, but it really isn’t, so I’ll just say that everything’s something I can deal with and get over.  I’m just going to take the time to get there, and not stress over trying to focus on producing blog content in the meantime.  Things will be back on track next week, with a normal mid-month blog in Spanish.  For this week’s, let’s just skip on to the numbers.

As I said, no hiccup in the learning, as it was a welcome distraction over the weekend.  My reading schedule has become semi-uniform over time as a result of me finding myself not pushing past the same, 90ish minute amount each day at work.  I could push harder some days, but I’m finding this current rate comfortable, so it’s been working for me.

This week, I finished off Bojack Horseman and the season of Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts from Netflix, and I am excited for another season of the latter, and left melancholic and thoughtful from the former.  I’m still pretty close to it, but I think Bojack is in the shortlist for best television series of the past two decades.  And I don’t say that lightly, the past two decades had Breaking Bad in it, among a ton of other amazing shows.  I also didn’t approach Bojack expecting that much out of it, and hoo, was I caught off-guard by how great it is.  Like, it was one of those shows that friends of mine had suggested that I wasn’t really ever planning on getting to unless I was, like, trapped on a 13 hour flight or something and was desperate to kill time, and the only reason I started it was because I noticed it had a Spanish dub.  In some ways, I feel like starting in on something like that and ending up thinking so highly of it makes it even more special than if you went into it hyped to begin with.  It feels more like finding treasure, I guess.

This is overshadowing Kipo, which I was also very impressed by and hope they make more seasons of.  After KOing two Netflix shows in short order, I’m reminded of both how much stuff I have queued up, but also how finite it is.  I’m going to need to settle into a new routine with watching/listening practice here going forward, beyond Ducktales at least.

I’m a bit over halfway through Mago Aprendiz now, and I’ve been enjoying it, which is good, because I really needed another long series to sink my teeth into, and The Riftwar Cycle is a good 30 books long.  I haven’t looked into how much of it is available in Spanish yet … I should check in on that soon, else I might be in for a nasty surprise.

Anyway, I’m going to leave it there for this week.  TTFN.
